Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi will, on Sunday, outline progress in the implementation of the province’s response to Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).
Between July and September, at least 13 women were found murdered and their bodies dumped across Ekurhuleni Metro, including areas in Kempton Park, Tembisa, Springs, and Kwa-Thema.
Following the President’s directive, Lesufi unveiled a provincial action plan to tackle GBVF.
It included tighter monitoring of police stations, an audit of unresolved cases involving women and children, audits of unsafe public spaces, recovery plans for stalled cases, increased support for victims and shelters, measures to reduce forensic backlogs and a crackdown on unlicensed liquor outlets.
On Sunday, Lesufi will address the media on progress to date and further measures to strengthen prevention and enhance the safety of residents, particularly women and children.
