Educators’ union SADTU in the North-West, has urged the education department to prioritise safety in schools after a principal at Matlhonyane Primary School near Mahikeng in the North-West was stabbed allegedly by a former learner last week.
It is alleged that the suspect attacked a grade 6 learner near the school premises. The principal reportedly intervened and was stabbed.
SADTU provincial secretary George Themba says, “We feel that our members are no longer safe in our schools and therefore, we urge the Department of Education to do everything possible in making sure that our schools are safe for both our educators and learners. We also urge the community to work closely with the Department of Education and our schools to ensure schools are safe. We need to work very hard in making sure that violence in our schools is kept and avoid the situation whereby educators are attacked.”
