The Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) in the Western Cape have committed to working with authorities to resolve their issues.

They met with stakeholders from the provincial Mobility Department, the City of Cape Town and the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) today.

The meeting follows a deadly dispute over routes affecting Delft, Langa and Epping over the past few weeks.

Police and law enforcement officers have been monitoring various ranks and routes as services have resumed.

The department has also obtained an interim interdict against the two taxi associations.

Provincial Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku says both groups have committed to ending the violence.

“Today’s meeting was a positive step towards ending taxi violence. CATA and CODETA have agreed to work with facilitators to resolve their differences and have committed to putting down their guns. Our priority is the safety of commuters. Residents must be able to use public transport without fearing for their lives. Government will continue working towards a lasting solution.”
