In brief: EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has condemned Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, stating that he presented “a lot of lies, a lot of false narratives” during the G20 ministerial meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. Hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ahead of December’s Miami summit, the plenary sessions saw sharp clashes over Ukraine and the Middle East, with European diplomats pushing back against provocative Russian assertions.

Kallas Rebukes Lavrov Over ‘Lies’ and Falsehoods at G20

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov “put forward a lot of lies, a lot of false narratives” at a meeting of G20 top diplomats, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has said.

The foreign ministers of the world’s biggest economies met in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday and Saturday for talks ahead of a full G20 leaders’ summit in December.

Sharp disagreement emerged around the table at Friday’s plenary session, hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

As the talks were dominated by the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, European leaders had to push back against what one European diplomatic source described to AFP as “quite provocative” statements by Lavrov.

“He put forward a lot of lies, a lot of false narratives,” Kallas told the news agency after the meeting.

At a press conference following the talks, Lavrov criticized European attendees for their “arrogant boycott,” in apparent reference to the refusal of many officials to pose for a group photo with him, and praised the Trump administration for its willingness to engage with Moscow.

Poland ‘deserves a seat’

Earlier, Lavrov had criticized the decision to invite Poland to attend this year’s G20 meeting, saying Warsaw’s presence at the forum “contributes nothing” and “violates the principles of diplomacy.”

However, in public remarks after the event, Rubio praised Poland and expressed support for its full membership of the group.

“President Trump believes very strongly that Poland deserves a seat at this table of global leaders, and we very much hope to see them, and other strong nations on the rise, invited back next year,” Rubio said.
