Ukraine’s Energy Sector Faces One of Largest Attacks Yet

One of the largest-scale Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector is currently underway, with energy facilities targeted more than 20 times over the past 24 hours, state-owned power grid operator Ukrenergo said on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

“Since last night, the enemy has been carrying out one of the most extensive attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure,” the company said in a statement on Telegram.

Ukrenergo said the latest strikes had further complicated the situation in Ukraine’s power system, causing significant damage to energy infrastructure.

Emergency power outages are currently being implemented in several regions, including Kyiv, the company said. DTEK reported three of its thermal power plants had been knocked completely offline.

Thousands of energy workers have been working since overnight to assess the damage and restore electricity supplies. Priority is being given to reconnecting critical infrastructure facilities, Ukrenergo added.

All relevant services are coordinating efforts to stabilize the power system and restore electricity as quickly as possible.

Water supplies were disrupted in parts of Kyiv on Tuesday following an overnight Russian attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Kyivvodokanal, the capital’s main water utility, said its main facilities had been cut off from power, leaving the city without water. Restoration work is underway, but the company warned it could take time. The utility advised residents to refill water at pump rooms across the city.

Ukrainian officials have warned that Russia intends to disable much of the country’s utility infrastructure during the winter. A recent UN report said the attacks could amount to crimes against humanity, citing Moscow’s publicly stated intention to disrupt essential supplies for civilians.
