A woman identified as Grace Obeng has reportedly been arrested and released on police enquiry bail, while her husband is said to be untraceable following allegations that they assaulted and threatened a 16-year-old boy at Appolonia in the Kpone Katamanso Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The allegations, according to the boy’s family, were reported to the Katamanso Police Station. The woman was reportedly detained on Friday, October 30, and released the following day, Saturday, October 31, 2026.

However, the circumstances surrounding her release and the whereabouts of her husband, identified as Mr Alex Appiah Yego, have not been independently confirmed.

The boy’s father said the incident occurred on Thursday, October 29, after his son visited a female classmate, also aged 16, at her home following an invitation from her.

He explained that his son had saved GH¢80 towards buying the girl a birthday present and received an additional GH¢100 from him to complete the purchase. The father said the gesture was intended to reciprocate the girl’s kindness after she had given his son a gift on his birthday.

According to the father, the two teenagers spent time watching cartoons at the girl’s residence while her parents were away.

He said his son arrived at the house at about 1:00 pm and was welcomed into the hall. The teenagers later prepared and ate instant noodles before returning to watch cartoons.

The father said his son was preparing to leave at about 3:00 pm for rehearsals as a pianist, when the girl’s mother arrived and allegedly confronted him in the corridor.

Recounting his son’s account of what happened, the father said the woman allegedly slapped the teenager repeatedly without allowing him to explain why he was at the house.

He further alleged that she pushed the boy to the floor and dragged him and her daughter into the girl’s bedroom, where both teenagers were beaten.

The father claimed that the woman subsequently called her husband, and that the teenagers were made to remain in the room for close to two hours while they waited for him to arrive.

Mr Appiah Yego, whom the father identified as a clearing agent at the Tema Port, allegedly assaulted the boy when he arrived, punching him and beating him with a belt and a stick.

The father further alleged that the man threatened to kill his son and instructed his wife to bring him a knife, but she did not comply.

“My son said the man told him that he was very lucky and that he could kill him and dump his body somewhere without anyone knowing about what had happened to him,” he recounted.

The father also alleged that his son was pelted with a stone as he was being forced out of the room. He claimed the teenager’s mobile phone was seized during the incident but was later recovered by the police the following day.

He said his son sustained visible bruises and other injuries and had remained traumatised since the incident.

“My son remains traumatised since the incident on Thursday and is unable to eat. He complains of dizziness and pain in the rib. Although we’ve been to the hospital for preliminary medical treatment, he still complains of severe pain,” he said.

The family is calling for a thorough police investigation and intervention from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Department of Social Welfare and other child protection institutions.

“I am a father seeking justice, not revenge. I want accountability, a thorough investigation and the protection of my child,” the father said.

He also appealed to child protection agencies to take steps to safeguard children against abuse.

“Child safety is not optional. Whether in Ghana, the United States, or anywhere, every child deserves protection. I am calling on the Ghana Police Service, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and all child protection institutions to investigate and protect not only my son but every single child being abused. Let us stand for our children’s safety and not remain silent,” he added.

Woman’s admission

Meanwhile, the woman has reportedly acknowledged subjecting the teenager to beatings, expressed regret over her actions and offered to bear the cost of his medical treatment.

She reportedly explained that she had previously warned her daughter against entertaining boys at their home but admitted that she could have handled the situation differently.

However, she disputed some aspects of the boy’s account, particularly the allegation that her husband threatened him with a knife. She also denied that the teenagers had been locked in the bedroom, explaining that the room’s lock was not functioning.

The woman further disputed the boy’s account of where he was when she arrived. While she reportedly maintained that he was already in the bedroom, the teenager, according to his father, insisted that he was in the corridor preparing to leave when she confronted him.

The father also alleged that the woman recorded a video of the teenagers in the bedroom and sent it to her husband in a manner he believed was intended to suggest that they were engaged in inappropriate conduct.

Mr Appiah Yego is yet to be apprehended, according to the family, which says his whereabouts remain unknown.

The police investigation is ongoing, and the allegations against both adults have not been established in court.

The identities of the two teenagers are being withheld to protect their privacy.
