Wondering how long your new electric car might last? This 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV is proving that electric vehicles can rack up miles with the best of them – and its owner is committed to taking it past the half million mile mark.
You’d think a 250,000 mile Ford Mustang Mach-E maintaining 92% of its battery life, a 360,000 mile Hyundai IONIQ 5 with 87% battery health still intact, and a half-dozen stories of Tesla Model S, 3, and Y ride share vehicles racking up six figures on their odometers later would do more to convince the slow adopters and doubting Thomases of the world that EV batteries are built to last. The good news is that the evidence keeps piling up, and this latest example of electric endurance is a good one.
On the Out of Spec Renew YouTube channel, the crew took in a 2019 Chevy Bolt EV – one of the most affordable new EVs you could buy in 2019 – that had more than 470,000 miles on the clock and 330,000 miles on its post-recall battery. That’s nearly half a million miles on the original electric motor, and it’s still got more to go.
Out of Spec Renew replaced the 2019’s battery pack that was experiencing serious battery faults and cell-voltage imbalances with a stable, lower-mile example from a 2017 model. Once it was up and in, they got the car powered up, programmed, and driving again, putting the owner on track to reach the 500,000 mile milestone (sorry) in their trusty steed.
The OOSR crew paid $1,800 for the “new” battery, but estimates consumers would pay between $2,500-3,000 for the a similar pack. You can check out the full battery replacement video, below, then let us know how far you plan on taking your EV in the comments.
