Americans flying to Ethiopia are told to complete the Ethiopia health declaration form online before they check in. Ethiopian Airlines, the national carrier, says this speeds up entry at Addis Ababa.

The same airline notice lists coffee, battery and baggage rules that catch visitors out at the airport. This guide sets out what is confirmed before you book for Ethiopian Christmas on Thursday 7 January 2027.

What the Health Declaration Form Is

The Ethiopia health declaration form is an online self-declaration that travellers fill in before they arrive. Ethiopian Airlines lists it in its travel update for Ethiopia and links to the government site at e-thtp.ephi.gov.et.

The site asks whether you have had certain symptoms and whether you travel by air or cross by land. It offers several languages, including English, and creates a QR code once you submit.

Ethiopian Airlines tells passengers to complete the Ethiopia health declaration form before check-in or boarding. It adds that doing so speeds up your entry in Ethiopia.

How to Complete the Ethiopia Health Declaration Form

Open the web address from the airline’s travel update and fill in the form before you leave for the airport. Use the same name and passport number that appear on your ticket and visa.

Save a screenshot of the QR code and the declaration ID that the Ethiopia health declaration form gives you. Keep a copy with your passport, because staff may ask for it at check-in or on arrival.

The airline does not say how many hours before departure you may submit the form or whether it is free. Do not pay any third-party website that offers to fill it in for you, because the airline links only to the government address.

Visa and Safety Basics for Americans

The Ethiopian embassy in Washington says all foreign nationals who want to enter Ethiopia need a visa. The Ethiopia health declaration form does not replace the visa, so sort out your visa first.

The US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in its advisory dated 1 April 2026. It says the security situation in Addis Ababa is stable, but violence elsewhere could worsen without warning.

The advisory lists Tigray, Afar, Amhara and several other regions as Do Not Travel, which is its highest warning. It also says internet and phone services are often restricted before, during and after unrest.

Ethiopia does not recognise dual citizenship, and the State Department says Americans should not enter on an Ethiopian passport. Carry a copy of your passport and visa and keep the originals in a hotel safe.

Taking Ethiopian Coffee Home

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, and many visitors want to carry bags of beans home. The airline allows 2 kg of coffee products out of the country, and more needs approval from the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority.

That limit is about four and a half pounds, which is enough for several retail bags. Buy from a shop that gives a receipt, and keep it in your hand luggage.

On the US side, Customs and Border Protection says agricultural items can be removed from baggage because they can carry pests and diseases. Its page does not say whether coffee is restricted, so call the US Department of Agriculture’s plant health service (APHIS) on 1-877-770-5990 before you pack.

Battery and Baggage Rules on Ethiopian Flights

Ethiopian Airlines says power banks must not be used on board and must be kept under the seat, not in the overhead bins. Battery-powered self-balancing vehicles such as hoverboards are banned from carry-on and checked bags.

Lithium-ion batteries rated above 100 Wh but not above 160 Wh need the airline’s approval and must pass a standard safety test. Most phone and laptop batteries fall well below that limit, so check the label on any camera or drone battery.

On a domestic connection, the airline says you must collect your bags in Addis Ababa and clear customs. You then check them in again, so leave extra time.

Passengers with hidden disabilities can ask for the Adey Flower lanyard at Bole Airport, which signals staff to offer priority help. The airline also asks passengers who need medical clearance to submit a medical information form before they fly.

What Is Not Confirmed Yet

The airline notice states no fee, no deadline and no validity period for the Ethiopia health declaration form, and it carries no publication date. Visa fees are set by Ethiopian authorities, so confirm the current amount with the embassy or the e-visa service before you apply.

Whether border staff check the confirmation of every traveller on arrival has not been announced. Complete the form anyway, because the airline asks for it.

Rules can change without warning, so recheck the airline’s travel update and the State Department advisory a few days before you fly. Submit the Ethiopia health declaration form again only if the airline or the government site tells you to.
