The two teachers of Techiman Senior High School arrested over the viral assault of a 17-year-old Form 3 student have been granted bail by the Bono East Regional Police Command.
The suspects, Jerry Jones Owusu Bekoe, a 37-year-old English teacher, and Ameyaw Adusa, a 44-year-old ICT teacher, were granted bail on Tuesday and are expected to reappear before the command on Wednesday.
Sources at the school told Joy News that the two teachers met their bail conditions, and one of them was granted bail to enable him to sit for an examination scheduled for today.
The Arrest and Investigation
The two educators were arrested on November 1, after a viral video captured them assaulting the final-year student on campus. The footage sparked widespread outrage and prompted swift action from the police.
In an exclusive interview with Joy News’ Anass Sabit, the Regional Commander, DCOP Shaibu A. Sadique-Osei, confirmed that investigations into the incident have commenced.
“We have commenced investigations, and we are working to have further details into what preceded the assault by the teachers,” DCOP Sadique-Osei said. “They have given their account of the situation.”
The Regional Commander indicated that the police are exploring all legal avenues and warned that the case could end up in court if a prima facie case is established.
“If possible, the criminal aspect of the case will end in court if a prima facie case is established,” he stated.
He also urged the public to remain calm and assured them that justice would be served.
“The public should be calm and be assured that the matter will be addressed to its logical conclusion,” he added.
Regarding the victim’s welfare, the Regional Commander confirmed that the student is receiving the necessary support.
“The victim has been given the necessary psychological support, and the police are in touch with him,” he said.
GES Investigates as School Engages Parents of Bullied Students
The Ghana Education Service (GES) is also taking the matter seriously. The Municipal Director of Education, Isaac Amankwa, told Joy News that a committee has been set up at the school level to investigate the matter.
“A team from the regional level is also working to have a full regional disciplinary committee to look into it,” Mr Amankwa said.
He provided an update on the victim’s condition, stating that the student is responding to treatment at the Holy Family Hospital.
“He complained of pains at the back of his head, but he is in a stable condition,” Mr Amankwa said. “GES will follow due administrative process to ensure that justice is served.”
In a related development, the school is now engaging the parents of the two first-year students who were allegedly bullied by senior students—the incident that reportedly triggered the assault.
Sources say the school authorities are working to address the situation and provide support to the affected first-year students, who earlier told Joy News off-camera that they have been left traumatized and wish to be taken out of the school.
What Triggered the Assault?
While the viral video captured the shocking moment of the assault, our checks have revealed a troubling chain of events that preceded it.
Sources indicate that the two final-year students allegedly bullied two first-year students, subjecting them to severe beatings that made them roll on the floor seemingly for no apparent reason. It was this conduct that caught the attention of the two teachers, who, out of anger, went overboard in the now-viral video.
The two first-year students who were beaten spoke to Joy News’ Anass Sabit, sharing their horrifying experience. They said what they went through has instilled fear in them and they wish to be taken out of the school.
