Millions of South Africans are expected to cast their votes in the 2026 Local Government Elections (LGE) on Wednesday, to elect municipal representatives who will govern their communities for the next five years.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has highlighted that a record of 29.2 million voters are regestered to partake in the 4 November polls. Women account for the majority of registered voters, with 16.1 million, representing 55.27% of the total, whilst Men account for 13 million, or 44.73% of registered voters.

Gauteng has the highest number of registered voters, with 6.4 million, accounting for 23.1% of the national total. KwaZulu-Natal follows with 6 million voters, representing 20.63%.  The Eastern Cape has 3.6 million registered voters, while the Western Cape has 3.4 million, accounting for 12.41% and 11.83% respectively.

The elections come amid ongoing concerns about service delivery, municipal accountability and the provision of basic services in communities across the country.
