Eight students from Vine Christian High School and International Community School (ICS), Ghana, represented Ghana at the 2026 Global Brilliant Blue Challenge in Nova Scotia, Canada, gaining valuable international exposure, exchanging ideas with students from other countries, and exploring innovative approaches to ocean sustainability. The Ghanaian delegation comprised two teams, one of which secured third place in the Healthy Marine Life category.

The Global Brilliant Blue Challenge brought together 15 teams from countries around the world to develop and present ideas addressing challenges affecting the oceans. Participating countries included Ghana, the United States, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Tunisia, Scotland, Finland, Egypt, Chile, and Japan.

The competition provided a platform for young innovators to apply critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills to real-world environmental issues. For the Ghanaian students, it was an opportunity to showcase their ideas internationally while learning from peers with diverse perspectives and experiences.

A Global Platform for Ocean Innovation

The opening ceremony of the 2026 Global Brilliant Blue Challenge was attended by Diana Fox Carney, Canada’s First Lady, adding to the significance of the gathering and its focus on engaging young people in addressing global ocean-related challenges.

ATDP’s Executive Director was also present at the Brilliant Blue Challenge, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to supporting Ghanaian students on international platforms that promote innovation, collaboration, and learning beyond the classroom.

Ghana’s participation marked the country’s second entry into the Global Brilliant Blue Challenge. The team’s third-place achievement in the Healthy Marine Life category was a proud moment for the students, Vine Christian High School, and the wider Ghanaian delegation.

Learning Beyond the Competition

Beyond the competition itself, the students had the opportunity to explore Nova Scotia’s maritime heritage, landmarks, and cultural attractions through educational excursions and recreational activities.

In Lunenburg, the delegation visited the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic and the Lunenburg Shipyard, gaining insights into the region’s fishing history, shipbuilding heritage, and longstanding relationship with the ocean.

The students also experienced the Harbour Hopper in Halifax, exploring the city and its landmarks from a unique perspective. Visits to Mic Mac Mall and Halifax Shopping Centre provided additional opportunities for recreation, shopping, and bonding as a team.

These experiences complemented the competition by allowing students to learn outside the traditional classroom, encounter new environments, and create lasting memories with their teammates.

Expanding Global Learning Opportunities

Canada marked the 11th country ATDP visited for international events in 2026, reflecting the organization’s continued efforts to connect Ghanaian students with opportunities for global learning, academic growth, and personal development.

Through international competitions and educational programs, the Academic Talent Development Program (ATDP) works to nurture talent, strengthen critical-thinking skills, and expose students to experiences that broaden their understanding of the world.
