The Special Investigating Unit says it has appointed a curator to locate a luxury Bentley vehicle belonging to tender tycoon Hangwani Maumela.

SIU investigators swooped on a property in Midrand, Johannesburg, on Friday, where they had received a tip-off that the vehicle had been concealed there.

However, the vehicle was not found on the property.

The SIU says the Bentley is among the eight luxury vehicles being sought as part of its investigation into corruption and maladministration linked to the Tembisa hospital tender corruption.

Last year, the SIU obtained an order to preserve assets valued at R900 million linked to the so-called “Maumela Syndicate”.

SIU spokesperson Selby Makgotho says, “The Bentley is one of the 8 outstanding vehicles that are being sought in relation to and in pursuance of the court order. The other vehicles include four Ferraris, three Porches which brings to 8 of outstanding vehicles. To date, about 15 vehicles are currently held in the custody of the curator; this is in pursuance of the two previous court orders to place the vehicles under the curator’s control. The curator is actively tracing and preserving additional properties, assets and funds to give full effect to the preservation order, which is valued at R503 million.”
