"I've waited for a character that would take me far from my comfort zone. Out of all the scripts I read, Bostan Khan was the one that dared me. And I don't walk away from a dare," actor and singer Ali Zafar told The Express Tribune, explaining what drew him to his upcoming project, Gangs of Khorasan.
Known for his romantic screen presence, stylish appearance and soulful music, Zafar is now preparing to step into unfamiliar territory with a character that is a departure from the roles audiences have traditionally associated with him.
In the upcoming web series, Zafar plays Bostan Khan, a mysterious gangster whose rugged appearance, thick moustache and distinctive glasses have already caught the attention of fans after the actor shared a glimpse of his new look on social media.
Speaking to The Express Tribune, Zafar described Gangs of Khorasan as a mafia-themed web series, calling it the first of its kind in Pakistan. The project will see him explore a darker and more intense character, moving away from the romantic and light-hearted roles that have been a significant part of his acting career.
The transformation is particularly notable given Zafar's relatively limited acting appearances in recent years. His last major live-action film as a lead actor was Teefa in Trouble (2018), opposite Maya Ali. The film, which also marked his debut as a film producer and writer, became a commercial success. He later lent his voice to the animated film Allahyar and the 100 Flowers of God (2023). His appearance in Gangs of Khorasan therefore marks a significant return to screen acting, particularly in a web-series format, after an extended gap.
The series also features Feroze Khan, Humaima Malick, Sonya Hussyn and Syed Jibran. Feroze has established himself through television dramas including Khaani, Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3 and Akhara, while Humaima gained wider recognition through Shoaib Mansoor's film Bol (2011), followed by appearances in Bollywood and Pakistani cinema, including The Legend of Maula Jatt. Sonya Hussyn, known for her performances in Aisi Hai Tanhai, Ishq Zahe Naseeb and Deemak, has built a reputation for taking on challenging characters. Syed Jibran, meanwhile, has remained a familiar presence on television through dramas such as Chup Raho, Neem and Pagal Khana.
Produced by Anas Ali, with direction associated with Hamza Ansari, Gangs of Khorasan brings together an ensemble cast for a story centred on the world of organised crime. While further details about the storyline and the individual characters remain under wraps, the project's mafia theme and its cast have generated interest.
Ali Zafar started out on Pakistani television as an actor before becoming a popular musician, later also established a career in Bollywood and his success led many Pakistani actors to venture into Hindi films. He has received five Lux Style Awards and a Filmfare Award nomination.
Zafar began his music career as a composer and gained popularity with his single "Channo" from his debut album, Huqa Pani (2003), which sold over five million copies worldwide. "Channo" turned out to be a huge success, topping many music charts and earned him several awards for Best Music Album and Artist. Zafar made his acting debut in cinema with a leading role in the 2010 Bollywood satire film Tere Bin Laden, a moderate box office success. His performance in the film garnered critical appreciation and earned him several nominations in the Best Male Debut category, including Filmfare. He then also worked in several films, including Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Chashme Baddoor, and Dear Zindagi.
Alongside his acting and singing career, Zafar participates in tours, concerts, and stage shows, is active in humanitarian work, and has a number of endorsement deals.
On 23 March 2021, Ali Zafar was awarded the highest literary award, Pride of Performance, for his contribution in the field of arts and music.
For Zafar, however, the attraction appears to lie in the challenge of playing someone unlike the characters he has portrayed before. His decision to take on Bostan Khan suggests an attempt to expand his acting range and reconnect with audiences through a genre he has not previously explored in this way.
Zafar also introduced the character through a bold social media post, announcing himself as Bostaan Khan in Gangs of Khorasan. Sharing the first-person declaration, "Warned you not to mess with me. My world. My rules. I AM BOSTAAN KHAN!".
