Ariana Grande to Do Press for ‘Focker-in-Law’ Before Taking Previously Announced Break

In the clip posted Monday (Nov. 2), Skyler Gisondo — who plays the fiancé of Grande’s character Olivia in the Meet the Parents franchise film — has a mini Booksmart reunion with Beanie Feldstein and Eduardo Franco, remarking on the kismet that brought all three of them back together in Focker-in-Law seven years after Olivia Wilde’s critically acclaimed directorial debut. At the end, Grande enters the frame and gives Feldstein a big hug, telling the camera, “I know I wasn’t in Booksmart, but I love them so much!”

Laughing at her unexpected cameo in the on-set get-together, Gisondo and Franco said that while the R.E.M. Beauty founder was not in Booksmart, none of them got to be in the massive Wicked duology, which earned Grande an Oscar nomination. Feldstein quipped that she “would’ve slayed” if she had co-starred in Wicked, asking the pop superstar, “Who should I have been? One of the monkeys?”

“No!” Grande, still in her Glinda-blonde ponytail, replied with a laugh.

The Grammy winner has returned to her natural brunette since wrapping Focker-in-Law, which premieres Thanksgiving weekend. She also recently chopped her hair, debuting her new bob — which boyfriend Ricky Alvarez was head over heels for — on Instagram in October.

Now, she’s gearing up to return to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon alongside two other Focker-in-Law stars, Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller, the O.G. leads of the Meet the Parents franchise. As announced Monday, their joint guest appearance on the late night program will air at 11:35 p.m. ET on Sunday (Nov. 8) on NBC.

The love fest also continues in a new The Hollywood Reporter interview with Gisondo, who said it was “unbelievable” working with Grande. “I’ve grown up watching her become one of the most famous and talented performers in the world,” he told the publication. “She has an operatic vocal range, she’s an incredible performer and dancer and she’s effortlessly funny and charming in this movie. One day on set, after she played some of her unreleased music, I told her, ‘Nobody should be able to do this.’ She works so hard and cares so much about what she’s doing, and she’s such a perfectionist.”

Grande’s presence in the Focker promo cycle comes after Billboard confirmed that she’d be involved in the press run, despite her rep’s August announcement that she’d be stepping back from other public engagements amid “endless, ongoing public scrutiny” following her Eternal Sunshine Tour. The trek supported Billboard 200-topping album Eternal Sunshine and coincided with the release of Petal, which also topped the U.S. albums chart. “Hate That I Made You Love Me” topped the Billboard Hot 100 in June and remains in the chart’s top 10.
