Sam Fender has covered The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” for a festive TV spot for U.K. retailer John Lewis and earned the praise of Mick Jagger. The track features in the retailer’s newly released advert starring Kristin Scott Thomas (Slow Horses). Previous artists to soundtrack John Lewis’ annual Christmas advert include Lily Allen, AURORA and Lola Young. Watch the spot below.

The track was recorded in Tyneside in Fender’s hometown, and features the choir from the John Spence Community High School in North Shields, where Sam was a former pupil, and brass from the Easington Colliery Band.

“It was a privilege to rework such an iconic song by such a legendary band,” Fender said in a statement. “In the spirit of Christmas, we re-recorded the children’s choir with the kids from my old school, John Spence Community High School, and we arranged a brass section with the Easington Colliery Band.”

Rolling Stones frontman Jagger approved of the cover. “I’m a fan of Sam’s work, so I was pleased to hear he was covering one of my songs. I think he’s done a great job with it,” he said in a press release.

Released via Polydor Records, a 7” single and CD is now available via Fender’s official store, with 100% of net proceeds being donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust. “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” first appeared on the Stones’ 1969 album Let It Bleed, and was co-written by Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards.

Fender is set to tour the U.K. and Ireland with his Proper Massive stadium tour, which includes three dates at London’s Wembley Stadium.
